A Northern Michigan DESIGN BUILD FIRM
Founded and operated by Kevin Wheaton since 2013, Sustainable Landscapes has put down deep roots in the Grand Traverse region. Kevin’s passion for the outdoors began at the young age of eight, when he started mowing lawns for his father, who owned a landscaping business himself, and he’s never strayed from the industry. He has been practicing sustainable approaches to landscaping since his graduation from Michigan State University with a bachelor's in Horticulture & Landscape Design and Construction in 2008. After obtaining an internship in Traverse City, Kevin accepted a permanent position as a designer and foreman for a local landscaping company before ultimately launching Sustainable Landscapes. He continues to live in Traverse City with his wife Sabrina, their young daughter Adeline, and dogs Snickers and Reese.
Our mission
Sustainable Landscapes is founded on the belief that we all have a shared responsibility in protecting our environment for future generations. Inherent in our design philosophy is an underlying humility which recognizes nature’s design as the model to emulate. Our primary consideration when designing your outdoor space is the immediate and longterm impact on the environment, while providing eco-friendly solutions. Sustainable Landscapes actively contributes to the development of a healthy community in the Grand Traverse Region, by creating beautiful landscapes that are responsive to the environment, re-generative and require minimal inputs. In keeping with those values, we are proud to work with like-minded affiliates including the Northwest Michigan Invasive Species Network, the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association, Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, and Unilock. We also support the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy and are members of the Leelanau Conservancy Sustainers Circle.
