A sustainablE Approach

What Are the Benefits of Sustainable Landscaping?

Sustainable landscaping can be maintained at a steady level without exhausting valuable natural resources or causing severe ecological damage. Understanding our impact is at the core of what we do, and our landscapes are managed with practices that conserve limited natural resources, reduce waste, and prevent the pollution of air, water, and soil. Our goal is to provide as much value as possible, with the least environmental impact.

What’s the environmental impact of conventional landscaping?

Conventional landscaping can waste up to 50% of outdoor water usage. In addition, the residential application of pesticides is 20 times greater than that of agricultural farming, per acre. Overwatering damages plants and creates urban runoff that carries pollutants into streams, bays and lakes, having a significant and deadly impact on the local ecosystem. Additionally, pesticides and herbicides – many of which are toxic to humans – are often tracked inside the home where they contaminate the air and linger on floors and other surfaces.

Are sustainable landscapes Economical?

Traditional landscaping often requires a great deal of water, energy, labor, and other resources — causing environmental and economic costs to frequently outweigh the natural benefits of an urban landscape. By contrast, sustainable landscaping dramatically reduces water use, requires little to no chemical pesticides or fertilizers, and cuts back on waste generation and disposal. They also need less maintenance and do not pollute ground water.

A sustainable landscape can actually be more economical than conventional landscaping. For example, the use of organic mulch to reduce weeds and enrich the soil is less costly than herbicides and chemical fertilizers. Moreover, proper water usage reduces water bills, while plant placement can significantly increase a home’s energy efficiency through strategic shading.

When combined, these small steps contribute to a healthier outdoor space, while preserving and positively impacting our environment for future generations.
